HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall running back A.J. Turner and kicker Rece Verhoff were named as SBC Players of the Week on Monday, the league announced.

Turner earned the SBC Offensive Player of the Week award following a performance in which he accounted for 207 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns in the win over Georgia State.

In that win, Verhoff also had a pair of field goals from 47 and 49 yards respectively that helped the Herd stay over the top in the win.

"I'm really happy for A.J. and Rece," Marshall Football coach Charles Huff said. "Their commitment to the process is paying off."

Turner's banner day included a 177-yard rushing performance, which is the tops in the SBC in 2024 so far. He scored three touchdowns on the ground, including an 88-yarder in the game's final minutes that put the cap on the win.

The 88-yard touchdown is tied for the 6th longest rushing touchdown in Marshall history and he also added a 23-yard touchdown run in which he shook off a tackle for loss, reversed field and out-raced defenders to the end zone.

Turner also had a 30-yard touchdown reception out of the backfield just before halftime as the Herd built an advantage going into the break.

Currently, Turner leads the SBC in rushing yards with 717 and is the only running back in FBS with more than 50 carries to average 10 yards per carry (71 carries, 717 yards).

In earning SBC Special Teams Player of the Week honors, Verhoff connected on field goals of 47 and 49 yards to continue his success as of late in the kicking game.

Verhoff's 49-yard field goal was especially crucial, curbing momentum for Georgia State while pushing the Marshall advantage to 28-20 in the fourth quarter to take some of the pressure off the Herd.

Verhoff has now connected on his last eight field goal attempts, including five in the last two weeks with his last four attempts being from 40-plus yards. That includes a career-long 51-yarder that he hit against Georgia Southern.

With the announcement, Marshall has earned four SBC Player of the Week honors in the last four weeks with at least one in each phase of the game (two offensive, one defensive, one special teams). Others include defensive back J.J. Roberts (Sept. 30) and quarterback Braylon Braxton (Oct. 7).

Marshall is off this week but is preparing for a Nov. 2 home contest against ULM at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. To buy tickets for that game, click HERE.
