Herd Forces Season-High 20 Turnovers in Stern Test With Penn State at State Farm WBCA Showcase

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Marshall's women's basketball team (1-4) faced a tall task with the unbeaten (RV) Penn State Nittany Lions (6-0) Thursday evening at the Inaugural State Farm WBCA Showcase. The Herd forced a season-high 20 takeaways in a 74-59 defeat at the State Farm Field House at ESPN Wide World of Sports.
The Herd forced seven turnovers in the opening 10 minutes and 13 total in the first half. Aislynn Hayes, Madison Kellione, and CC Mays each had two steals in the first 20. Mays finished as the team's leading scorer with 12 points.
Defensively, Marshall also held the Nittany Lions' leading scorer without the point in the opening 20 minutes of the contest.
"I was really proud of our effort," Coach Juli Fulks said. "[Penn State] has two players averaging 20 points and 19 points going into the game and we held one of them scoreless in the first half and six in the game and we gave ourselves a chance. If we had just shot better in the first half, we were 1-of-17, we were getting unbelievable looks and we just couldn't get the ball to go in."
As the game progressed, Marshall did find themselves more comfortable shooting, making five triples in the second half, including the first in the career of freshman Kassie Ingram. MU's lone freshman from Cincinnati scored a career-high seven points.

"We made some adjustments offensively and defensively," Coach Fulks added. "It was the best fourth quarter we have put together, we won the fourth quarter, 26-20. So we're really proud of the effort and proud of the things we got better at as we went forward."
The Herd returns to the State Farm Field House floor Saturday at noon to wrap up the week against Tulsa. The game will be on Peacock and the NBC Fast App as well.
