HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Behind four double-figure scorers, the Marshall University Men's Basketball team (4-2) downed the South Carolina Bulldogs (4-4), 82-83, on Wednesday night in the Cam Henderson Center.
"I was proud of our whole group, not just Mik," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Corny Jackson said after the win. "Mik shot the ball really well, but I thought our whole team brought it tonight, the guys that played and our bench brought good energy. We stayed locked in. It's always good to get a win going into Thanksgiving."
Mikal Dawson led the team with 18 points, all coming on six makes from behind the arc. Obinna Anochili-Killen followed with 13 as Nate Martin and Will Moore each added 10. Martin also brought down a career-high 17 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
Dezayne Mingo tallied nine points while dishing out nine assists with only two turnovers in the win
Both sides started out slow offensively as The Herd found itself down 11-7 at the 14:42 mark. However, Marshall opened its offense with a 7-0 run with four points from Anochili-Killen and concluded with a three-pointer by Will Moore to go up 14-11 just over two minutes later.
MU continued its offensive barrage with an 11-3 advantage to extend its lead to 25-15 on a Ryan Nutter free throw.
Marshall ended the first 20 minutes by outscoring South Carolina State 17-1 in the final 4:13, including Dawson making four of his five three-point attempts in that span, to take a 46-21 lead into halftime.
Dawson continued with a hot hand making his first two longball attempts out of the break to go 6-for-7 on threes in a six-minute span.
The Herd grabbed its largest lead of the game after an 8-3 run with three freebies made by Jaleen Spear, a three from Moore and a layup by Nutter put them up by 32 points, 64-32, with 10:12 left in the game.
MU closed out the ballgame on a 5-0 run on a jumper by Wyatt Fricks, a free-throw from Kai Spears and a pair of makes from the charity stripe by Kaiden White.
