CARY, N.C. – The 13th-seeded Marshall Men's Soccer team (16-1-7) fell in a heartbreaker, 2-1, to the Vermont Catamounts (16-2-6) on Monday night in Cary, North Carolina, in the College Cup Final.
"I want to thank everyone who came down to support us fantastically well," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said after the match. "Obviously, it's a very tough way to lose. It was kind of on us. We made mistakes to let them back in the game with nine minutes to go. So, I think we'll be kicking ourselves. That'll haunt us for quite a while. But I think overall this season, I'm very proud of these guys. They've been tremendous all season."
Taimu Okiyoshi and Tarik Pannholzer were named to the College Cup All-Tournament Team after the contests. Pannholzer tallied The Herd's goal in the second half, his second of the College Cup and third of the NCAA Tournament.
Goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic made five saves in the match.
Marshall came under fire early in the match as Zach Barrett sent a header on target for Vermont in the fourth minute off a corner, but Janjic was there to make the save.
The Herd answered with shots by Takahiro Fujita in the eighth, Pannholzer in the 15th and Alex Bamford in the 16th minutes with all three being blocked.
Then at the 22:07 mark, Janjic came up with another big save on a breakaway attempt by David Ismail to keep UVM off the board.
In the 25th minute, Thiago Apolinario sent an attempt wide as Haruhi Taneda had a shot blocked at the 34:01 mark in a scoreless half.
The Herd outshot the Catamounts 5-4 in the opening 45 minutes but was outshot 2-0 in shots on goal.
Janjic made his third save of the contest six minutes into the second half in a header by Yaniv Bazini.
In the 52nd minute, Alexander Stjernegaard registered MU's first shot on target, but the attempt was stopped by UVM keeper Niklas Herceg. Pannholzer sent another one at Herceg just over four minutes later, but the shot was saved.
Marshall found its mark in the 67th minute. Rai Pinto sent a cross into the box. Herceg deflected the pass to the feet of Pannholzer. The German forward slotted his shot into the top right corner to make it 1-0.
Taneda then nearly doubled the Green and White's lead with a shot in the 78th minute, but Herceg stopped the shot.
Vermont answered shortly after with a tally by Marcell Papp at the 80:25 mark as the contest was tied 1-1.
Janjic stayed strong in goal making key saves one on a point-blank attempt at the 84:01 mark by Maximilian Kissel followed by another stop on an attempt by Murray off a corner 13 seconds later to send the match to overtime.
Kissel scored the game winner for Vermont on a one-on-one opportunity in the 95th minute.
