CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Herd women's basketball team (4-6) will return home to close non-conference play following a narrow 67-64 defeat to the Big 12's Cincinnati (8-2) on the road Wednesday evening.
Led by Aislynn Hayes's 24 points, the Herd outscored the Bearcats 21-12 in the final quarter. Marshall held UC without a field goal over the final 5:04 of the contest, and twice had an opportunity to win the game or send it to overtime in the final seconds.
Hayes connected on one of her three triples down the stretch, with big steals and scores from Madison Kellione and Timberlynn Yeast also fueling the Herd comeback. The freshman's layup got Coach Juli Fulks's Herd to within a point after trailing by as much as 17 in the second half.

But it ended up being a 14-3 Cincinnati run over the final 4:19 of the first half and missed free throws proving costly for MU.
"Well free throw shooting certainly could have won us the game," Head Coach Juli Fulks said. "That is always a frustrating thing, the players were upset after because they knew they had a chance."
"It feels like a broken record, but the thing I appreciate is our players never quit," Coach Fulks added. "We kept chipping away and had a great fourth quarter, got some huge stops, we got some rebounds, we made big plays, we got steals. So I was really proud of that effort because they don't quit."

Marshall scored more points off of turnovers than the hosts. Both teams ended the game with 18 giveaways, but Marshall's 10 in the first half opened the deficit.
The Herd will return to the Cam Henderson Center Saturday, Dec. 21 for a 1 p.m. tip against the Davis & Elkins Senators to close out non-conference play. For tickets, view HERE.
