HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – With Sun Belt Conference games starting next week, the defending champion Herd women's basketball team will go into league play following a 77-38 win over Davis & Elkins Saturday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Herd was led by Meredith Maier's 13 points on a balanced scoring effort for the Herd. All 13 dressed players for the Herd entered the contest.
Defensively, Marshall was dominant. The Herd won the rebounding margin 57-35. MU forced 24 Senators' turnovers, the most forced in a game this year. The 38 points were the least a Marshall team has allowed since 2022, with only the two points given up in the third quarter.
"For a general whole of the game, there were a lot of really good segments," Head Coach Juli Fulks said. "We started the third quarter and switched defenses and that had a pretty significant effect and helped us build the lead. We had a plan today of what we wanted to do. Unfortunately, Blessing King couldn't enjoy it like the others because she was under the weather. She and I made a decision on what we were going to do. I thought everyone had a really good opportunity and got a lot of good minutes and made the most of it."
Marshall allowed just two field goals in a 14:28 span of game action to take control. The run spanned from a 34-18 scoreline with 4:18 in 2nd to 65-22 after the third quarter.
Of the 13 players who saw minutes, 11 scored including Kassie Ingram. Marshall's lone freshman reached double figures Saturday with 10 points, her second time surpassing that mark this year for the forward from Cincinnati.

"It has definitely started to come just with practice," Ingram said. "It has definitely been an adjustment coming from high school but I feel like I have been handling it pretty well and am looking forward to conference play!"
The Herd will be back on the court in eight days following a break for the holidays. Marshall will open its SBC title defense on Sunday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. at home against Texas State.
