Marshall Softball Rolls Past Michigan State to Close Opening Weekend with Win

Herd returns to action next week at ECU Pirate Clash
BOCA RATON, Fla. — The Marshall softball team ended opening weekend at the FAU Paradise Classic with its best overall performance.
The Herd defeated Michigan State, 10-1 in 5 innings. Marshall jumped on the Big Ten Spartans with seven runs in the 2nd and three more in the 3rd. MU pitching held Michigan State to just one hit and one run while striking out three.
Coach Morgan Zerkle's team finishes the opening weekend 2-3 having played all five games against teams from multi-bid league conferences in 2023.
"There were a lot of bright spots on the weekend," Zerkle said. "We scored in every game, and I think many of our hitters walked up to the plate with great confidence. Bub [Feringa] had her first-career win in the circle, and it's always fun to run rule a P5 team. We have a good foundation to build upon, and the future is bright for this team.
The seven-run explosion started and ended with catcher Reagan Glanz notching singles. The senior transfer catcher scored the game's first runs on a throwing error by the Spartan first baseman.
From there, the Herd made MSU pay, with RBI hits from Rielly Lucas and Bella Gerlach, and a sacrifice fly from Camryn Michallas.
Lucas would finish the game with three runs batted in.
Pitcher Savannah Rice was dominant in her first win of the season. The senior pitched three scoreless innings before freshman Emily Cole finished the game with two innings of one-run ball in relief.
UP NEXT
Marshall travels next weekend to the East Carolina Pirate Clash. The Herd will open the weekend with a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 16 against Fairfield at 11 a.m. and Longwood to follow.
