Marshall Softball Travels to Greenville for ECU Pirate Clash

Herd to face Longwood, Fairfield and host Pirates
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Following an opening weekend against stiff competition, Marshall's softball team (2-3) travels to East Carolina University for five games over three days.Â
The Herd opens the weekend with a doubleheader Friday starting at 11 a.m. against the Fairfield Stags.Â

Coach Morgan Zerkle
- On June 26, 2023, Morgan Zerkle was named the 5th head coach in the history of the Marshall softball program.
- Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - collected an abundance of team-records for Marshall as a player from 2014-17. Zerkle has spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio).Â
- On coaching for Marshall, Zerkle said, "I am feeling immense gratitude, joy, pride and emotion as I come back to Huntington – my home – to lead the Herd, I can't wait to get started."
PRE-GAME NOTES
- Marshall opened the 2024 season at the FAU Paradise Classic, going 2-3 with wins coming over Michigan State.
- The Herd's Rielly Lucas led the way offensively with a .467 average and seven RBI.Â
- The Herd and Pirates have an expansive softball history, having met on 36 previous occasions. MU leads the all-time series, 19-17 with the last game between the two sides coming in 2015.Â
ABOUT THE ECU PIRATES
- East Carolina is 7-0 this season while outscoring opponents, 59-11. Sophomore outfielder Emma Jackson is leading the team with a .630 average and was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week Monday.Â
- The Pirates were picked 8th in the AAC Preseason Poll. Marshall's opponent last week, FAU, was picked 5th.Â
ABOUT THE FAIRFIELD STAGS
- Fairfield will open its 2024 season with Marshall Friday after having been idle the opening weekend of the season.Â
- The Stags were picked 3rd in the MAAC Preseason Poll. Returning All-MAAC Outfielder Charli Warren led the team with 51 hits last season.Â
ABOUT THE LONGWOOD LANCERS
- Longwood had a busy opening weekend in Atlanta, playing tight contests with #14 Alabama, Georgia Tech, and Villanova. The Lancers went 1-5 overall.Â
- The Lancers were picked as Co-Favorite in the Big South Preseason Poll. The team had a league-high five members named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.Â
