Marshall surpasses 20 regular season wins for first time since 1990-91

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – The Marshall women's basketball team out-scored Texas State 27-5 in the second quarter and used separate runs of a dozen or more points to pick up its 20th win of the season in an 85-59 victory over Texas State.
Marshall also hit a season-high 17 3-pointers in the contest, led by six from Sydni Scott, who finished with 18 points.
"We shot well, we did a good job of playing hard and not losing our composure when we weren't shooting well in the 1st quarter," Coach Kim Caldwell said. "Then once we got hot we got a little more comfortable."
With the win, the Herd is now 20-6 and 14-1 in Sun Belt Conference play. It is the sixth time in program history the team has surpassed 20 wins in a season. It is also the first time the team has collected 20 regular-season wins since the 1990-91 season.
MU used a 21-0 run over the final 5:08 of the first half to turn a seven-point deficit into a 14-point halftime lead. In that span, the Herd made five of its 17 total triples while forcing nine of the team's 24 first-half turnovers. Texas State ended the game with 33 total turnovers.
"We try to get quick steals after a make," Caldwell added. "I thought our defense was horrendous tonight once the ball crossed half court so thankfully we were able to get some steals on our end and go get some easy offense."
Marshall trailed 21-9 before roaring back to score 33 of the game's next 40 points to take a 42-28 lead into the locker room. That figure included out-scoring the Bobcats, 27-5, in the second quarter – the second straight game that the Herd has outscored its opponent by 20 points in one quarter. The Herd also did so to Old Dominion on Saturday (32-12 in third quarter).

Marshall closes its four-game road swing at ULM Saturday. Tip from Monroe is at 1 p.m. eastern/noon local time. One more win would clinch at least a share of the SBC regular season title.
