Herd Falls to Hoosiers on Final Day of Hillenbrand Classic

2/25/2024 2:00:00 PM | Softball

Sunday marked Marshall’s first game against former Coach Stanton

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. — Less than 11 hours after their game ended late Saturday night, Marshall's softball team fell to Indiana by a 12-6 score.

MU is 8-7 following a weekend of taking down Central Michigan and Drake, but suffering defeats to 23rd-ranked Arizona and the Big Ten's Hoosiers.

Sunday morning's game was the first time the Herd faced longtime former Coach Shonda Stanton as IU's manager. Current leader of the Herd, Morgan Zerkle played all four years under Stanton from 2014-17.

"What a cool opportunity, getting to face my head coach formerly at Marshall," Zerkle said. "We have a fun, competitive rivalry. We respect each other and she has taught me so much, it was fun to see some of what she has taught me put in play today."

The Herd rallied for three in the 2nd on the heels of back-to-back home runs by Bub Feringa and Camryn Michallas, her first of the season. A Rielly Lucas RBI fielder's choice gave the Herd a 3-2 lead after three before Indiana struck for seven in the 4th.

For Feringa, the long ball capped a two-homer weekend with seven hits in her return to her home state of Arizona.

Fellow Grand Canyon state natives also had nice homecoming weekends. Sydney Bickel had an impressive nine hits in the team's five games, driving in three from the leadoff spot.

Brooklyn Ulrich had six hits as well while driving in five.
