Former Akron assistant, Huntington Prep leader named Herd’s Associate Head Coach
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Men's Basketball Coach Cornelius Jackson announced the hiring of Rob Fulford as Associate Head Coach on Tuesday.
Fulford, a Marshall graduate, returns to his alma mater after spending the last seven seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Akron.
"I've known Rob for many years. He's a first-class person and a first-class coach with a first-class work ethic," Jackson said. "He's a proven winner who's had major success coaching and recruiting at the college and prep school levels. We couldn't be more excited to welcome him and his family back home to Huntington!"
Fulford was a major part of Akron's team success over the last seven seasons – a span in which they averaged more than 20 wins per season and earned three Mid-American Conference titles, which included titles and NCAA tournament berths in 2022 and 2024.
Part of the Zips' success was elite talent, which Fulford had a large part in bringing in as the team's recruiting coordinator. Some of those players included 2020 MAC Player of the Year Loren Cristian Jackson and fellow two-time All-MAC selections Xavier Castaneda, who won the 2023 MAC Scoring title, and Ali Ali.
In all, the Zips had 13 All-MAC selections and five All-Defensive selections during Fulford's time at Akron.
Prior to heading to Akron, Fulford spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Missouri where he recruited the No. 15 class in 2014-15, which got him named by Stadium as one of the top assistant coaches in the country.
Before his time with Missouri, Fulford was no stranger to the Huntington area, leading one of the nation's top prep programs in Huntington Prep from 2009-14.
During five seasons at Huntington Prep, Fulford compiled a 138-17 record while consistently being ranked in the Top-5 nationally among prep programs over his final three seasons.
Fulford was a Sports Illustrated Coach of the Year finalist in 2013-14 and also served as Jordan Brand's East Head Coach. He also coached future No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick Andrew Wiggins (2014), 2018 NBA Draft lottery pick Miles Bridges and 2013 NBA Draft First Round pick Gorgui Dieng.
The Mullens, W.Va., native also coached Mountain State Academy for three years (2006-09) where he led the team to an 81-14 record prior to the program's shift to Huntington.
Fulford received his B.A. in Education from Marshall University in 1997.
