Herd Women’s Basketball Drops Tough One To App State

Mays’ double-double leads Herd in 68-64 loss to Mountaineers

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Women's Basketball went to the wire with App State, falling 68-64 at Cam Henderson Center on Saturday afternoon.
The game went back and forth down the stretch, but the Herd could not get the basket to put them over the top as App State knocked free throws down late to secure the win.
"We just did not score enough in the fourth," Marshall head coach Juli Fulks said. "Fourteen points in the fourth is just not going to get it done in that type of game. We had lots of opportunities at the rim. We missed some shots that were right there. We need those to fall. I feel for our team because they are battling and sticking with it."
Senior combo guard C.C. Mays notched a double-double for the Herd, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds for Marshall in the loss.
Guard Aislynn Hayes also finished with 13 points for the Herd while Maddie Kellione also hit double-figures with 10 points. Peyton Ilderton finished with 8 points on 3 of 4 shooting.
Kellione's 3-pointer gave Marshall a 60-58 lead with 3:00 left and Ilderton's steal and layup tied the game at 62 with 1:07 left, but the Herd was unable to get another field goal in the final moments of the loss.
Marshall started strong in the loss, building a 12-point lead in the first half following a 3-pointer by Ilderton, which led to a 29-26 halftime advantage.
"We had another really, really good start," Marshall head coach Juli Fulks said. "I thought defensively, we had a lot of really good coverages."
The Herd returns to action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday night against Georgia Southern at Cam Henderson Center.
