HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – After some near misses, Marshall earned its first conference victory of the season with a 67-60 win over Georgia Southern Wednesday evening in front of 1,117 fans at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Herd (6-13, 1-7 SBC) used defensive pressure, forcing eight of its 16 overall turnovers in a 19-10 final quarter to close out a long-awaited win against the Eagles (9-11, 2-6 SBC).
"Well obviously I am really excited for our team to get that win and finally get that monkey off our back," Head Coach Juli Fulks said. "We spent the whole week talking about how we could get one possession better. We really have been wanting to play faster with a lot more defensive pressure but with some of the circumstances such as players having the flu and other things, it hasn't allowed us to be able to do that so getting everyone healthy and being able to play the full court most of the game I thought really helped us."
Senior Aislynn Hayes led the charge with 25 points, her fifth 20-plus point performance of the season. CC Mays continued her hot-shooting with 17 points as well.
"I just try to make stuff happen for my teammates," Hayes said. "I know if I make the easy shots early, [Georgia Southern] will all collapse on me when I go to the basket so then I will have the kickout and I know my teammates are going to make that three."
Marshall trailed 13-3 early, but had a game-best 11-point scoring run to close within a point after one. The Herd trailed by one after the first three quarters before a Mays and-one and a Hayes steal and score gave MU the lead for good.

The Hayes steal was one of 13 Marshall had Wednesday evening, a season-high against SBC opponents.
