HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall dominated defensively, forcing 22 turnovers for the second game in a row, but were unable to overcome a tough shooting night in a 54-48 defeat to Southern Miss Sunday from the Cam Henderson Center.
The Herd's (6-14, 1-8 SBC) Aislynn Hayes led all scorers with 26 points. For Hayes, it was the SBC's leading scorer's sixth 20-plus point performance of the season. Her six rebounds also led the team for the fourth time this year.
Unfortunately for MU, the team did not have a second double digit scorer against the Lady Eagles (7-13, 3-6 SBC).
"This was the third game we've driven a team to zone because we attacked the man-to-man, which in theory for our team is a really good thing because it allows our shooters to get open and we got really good looks and they just did not go in," Head Coach Juli Fulks said.
"Collectively that's a really frustrating day and it's one of the frustrating things of basketball is you can do a lot of things right and if the ball doesn't go in it doesn't matter."
Marshall shot 27 percent from the field, its second-lowest offensive shooting output of the year. The 48 points are the least amount of points the team has scored this year.
The Herd returns to the road for a Wednesday night contest at Coastal Carolina. Tip from Conway is at 6 p.m. on Jan. 29.
