Â
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Marshall University volleyball team (9-8, 1-3 SBC) dropped its weekend finale (25-19, 25-16, 25-16) at Georgia Southern (12-3, 3-1 SBC) on Saturday.
Â
"Tough match for us today in serve receive and defense," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "Our first ball execution really limited our ability to get into an offensive rhythm. Credit to both of Georgia Southern's outsides — they did a great job attacking around our block and using our hands effectively. We also didn't put enough pressure on them from the service line, which made it even tougher to defend such a talented and experienced group. Southern returned a core group of players with big-match experience, and that showed. That said, this weekend was full of valuable lessons. It's been huge for us to have these challenging conference matches early. We'll keep learning, keep growing, and continue to get better each week."
Emma Barnett led Marshall with 10 kills on a .304 hitting percentage and added two service aces and seven digs. Beatrice Ciccarelli provided six kills and a .200 hitting mark, while Bella Thompson paced the offense with 18 assists and chipped in a service ace.
Â
Georgia Southern took control early in the opening set, building a lead and holding off a late Marshall push to secure the first frame 25-19.
Â
Marshall started strong with a 5-1 run in the second, but Georgia Southern responded with a surge, grabbing the lead at 8-7. GS maintained it the rest of the way en route to a 25-16 set win.
Â
The Eagles extended an early advantage with a key service run and consecutive blocks, stretching the margin to 20-12 before closing out match with a 25-16 victory.
Â
Georgia Southern posted a .351 team hitting percentage compared to Marshall's .165, and seven blocks. The Herd registered four blocks and three service aces.
Â
UP NEXT
Marshall heads to Harrisonburg, Virginia, for a pair of matches at James Madison starting Thursday.
