MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 12-ranked and third-seeded Marshall Men's Soccer team (11-2-5) clinched a dramatic 3-2 victory in double overtime against No. 17-ranked and second-seeded West Virginia on Wednesday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, earning a place in the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The victory marked The Herd's first in Morgantown since 1997 and the program's first at Dick Dlesk Stadium.
Marshall is set to host fifth-seeded UCF on Sunday in the title game at 1 p.m. at Hoops Family Field.
"It was probably an entertaining game for both sets of fans. It was back-and-forth, a lot of action," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "There was a lot of motivation out there. There was a lot of things said about our demise here. I think they used that as motivation."
A physical, tightly contested semifinal saw freshman Joao Alves convert a penalty kick in the 110th minute to seal the win after a handball was awarded via VAR review to see MU advance to its third consecutive SBC Title Match.
After a scoreless opening half, Carl Romberg struck first for Marshall just over two minutes into the second period, firing a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner to give the Herd a 1-0 edge. West Virginia equalized in the 53rd minute through Isaac Scheer, but Marshall responded swiftly as Alves set up Joao Roberto, who finished from close range for a 2-1 lead.
The hosts pulled level again in the 67th minute behind Marcus Caldeira, setting the stage for a tense, back-and-forth affair deep into overtime. Both defenses bent but did not break, with Eddie DeMarco producing five key saves, including several under heavy pressure during the extra periods. Marshall's backline also withstood nine West Virginia corner kicks and 18 total shots.
