HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (15-14, 7-9 SBC) dropped a 3-1 (25-91, 24-26, 25-16, 25-18) decision to Southern Miss on Friday evening in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Â
"It was a tough weekend, and losses on days like today always sting," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "Still, our team battled and showed long stretches of really strong volleyball. The inconsistency on offense and a few tough decisions at key times cost us, but they're all things we can fix. I believe fully in this group. We'll regroup, respond the right way, and make the fixes we need to heading into tournament play."
Â
Beatrice Ciccarelli anchored the Herd with 13 kills on a .435 hitting percentage and contributed six blocks along with two service aces for a team-high 17.5 points. Emma Barnett also tallied 13 kills and added an ace, helping keep Marshall competitive throughout the match. Logan Henderson recorded 10 kills with a .292 hitting percentage and led a stout defensive front with five blocks. Audrey Geer finished with 12 digs, five kills and an ace to pace the back row defense.
Â
Southern Miss set the tempo early, grabbing the opening set 25-19 behind a strong offensive display. Marshall responded with resilience in the second set, overcoming 10 ties and a late deficit to earn a 26-24 win. The Herd's offense was at its best in the second frame, posting 15 kills to just two errors, as Ciccarelli and Barnett combined for critical points down the stretch.
Â
Despite the momentum shift, Southern Miss reclaimed control in the third set, limiting Marshall to 16 points and taking command with a series of multi-point runs. The fourth set was tightly contested into the late stages, with Marshall fighting back to tie the score at 18-18. However, a decisive 7-0 run from Southern Miss closed out the match, sealing the result and snapping the Golden Eagles' five-match losing streak.
Â
Marshall's defense registered 55 digs and nine total blocks, with Ciccarelli and Henderson leading the effort at the net.
