HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University Women's Basketball hosted No. 23 Kentucky for its first home contest against a ranked opponent since the 2006-07 season, falling 76-44 in front of 3,040 fans at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Herd (2-2) forced 15 steals but struggled offensively as the ranked Wildcats (5-0) used a dominant second quarter to pull away.
"We want to play these games, for a longtime basketball historian playing Indiana and Kentucky in one week is a pretty good week," Head Coach Juli Fulks said. "We want to play big teams and big names and obviously we had a giant crowd out there, everyone has been excited for this game. We will get a lot out of this game, you find out what are the real problems. To me, that is much better to know now than to find out in mid-December."
The matchup began as a defensive battle, with both teams trading stops and turnovers in a low-scoring first quarter that ended with Kentucky ahead 9-6. Marshall remained close early before the Wildcats took control during the second period, outscoring the Herd 27-11 behind strong play in the paint and transition. Kentucky entered halftime holding a 36-17 advantage.
Junior guard Timaya Lewis-Eutsey and senior guard Blessing King paced Marshall with nine points each. King added five boards, three steals and a block, providing energy on both ends.
Marshall's defense remained active despite the margin, forcing Kentucky into 18 turnovers, the most by the Wildcats this season.
