HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Men's Basketball delivered a dramatic second-half turnaround Wednesday evening, erasing a two-point halftime deficit and surging past Arkansas-Pine Bluff for a 98-70 victory.
On the backs of a Marshall career-high 23 points from Caleb Hollenbeck and an 18-point, 11-assist double-double from Jalen Speer, the Herd (4-1) unleashed an offensive assault in the second half, outscoring the Golden Lions (0-7) by 30 after halftime.
"Pleased with the second half," Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson said. "The first half we had a lack of focus, a lack of energy. The second half was much better, we came out with a big-time focus. We played harder, we made shots. Caleb (Hollenbeck) set the tone at the end of the first half with the two offensive rebounds. I thought that really set the tone for our whole team, we came out and played a heck of a second half."
Hollenbeck poured in a team-best 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting, including a scorching 7-for-8 from three-point range. His back-to-back triples midway through the second half stretched the lead into double digits and ignited the crowd of 3,373 at the Henderson Center.
Jalen Speer notched his first Marshall double-double with his 18 points and a game-high 11 assists with eight rebounds. Matt Van Komen anchored the paint with 15 points - 11 of which came in the second half - with six boards, two blocks and two steals.
