HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball Team (5-1) Mercyhurst 68-60 on Sunday night at the Cam Henderson Center, improving to 5-1 on the season.

"I like that we won a game that we didn't particularly play well," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson said. "It was more of a grinder. We tried to get in transition early. We had open looks. We just missed them, but then we wanted to slow it down ourselves and attach our switch."

Jalen Speer starred in the spotlight, pacing the Herd with 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting and knocking down five three-pointers, including a clutch triple with 2:24 left to push the Marshall lead to 61-54. Speer also added six rebounds and six assists, stepping up as the go-to scorer when the game hung in the balance. His pair of free throws with 34 seconds remaining all but sealed the win.

The Herd's total team effort shined throughout. Caleb Hollenbeck provided 12 points and hit four shots from beyond the arc to help open up the floor, while Matt Van Komen anchored the paint with nine points and 13 rebounds. Wyatt Fricks filled the box score with nine points, six boards, four assists, three steals and three blocks, including a game-clinching rejection in the final seconds.

After taking a narrow 27-23 lead into halftime in a tightly contested battle, the Herd relied on key contributions at both ends and a resilient defensive effort to keep the Lakers at bay. Marshall's defense held Mercyhurst to just 3-for-16 shooting from three-point range and produced critical stops in the closing moments.

Marshall found its rhythm early in the second half, building a 12-point advantage by the 10-minute mark, but Mercyhurst responded with several runs to keep the margin within reach, but the Herd answered with timely shots.

From the perimeter to the glass, the Herd executed as a unit: four players scored at least nine points, Marshall connected on 12 three-pointers at a 41 percent clip and matched Mercyhurst with 37 rebounds. The defensive wall held firm, especially in the final minute when Fricks' block and the ensuing rebound kept the Lakers from mounting any last-second rally.
