HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Women's Basketball led wire-to-wire, defeating IU Indy 81-70 Sunday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center. The Herd improved to 5-2 on the season with a victory which capped a three-win week for Coach Juli Fulks' side.
"Honestly I am really proud of the effort because three-game weeks are hard," Coach Fulks said. "The same things kind of go in a three-game week, defensive coverages get harder, rebounding on both ends gets harder, and with that kind of physical play, the ball just gets a little loose. We did a really good job of - when those things happened - we just kept battling."
"To our benefit, we have a lot of players who can do a lot of things and so playing 11 people, we don't have to bat an eye at that. We had a couple runs when they made a run and we had lots of people who stepped up."
Marshall opened the game on a tear, outscoring IU Indy 22-10 in the first quarter behind hot shooting and tenacious pressure. The Herd's defense locked down the Jaguars, holding them to 40 percent from the field and converting turnovers into points at the other end. IU Indy managed to trim the margin in the second quarter, but Marshall maintained a 36-26 lead at the half.
Timaya Lewis-Eutsey led the way for the Herd with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, knocking down all five free throws and dishing out five assists in 26 minutes..
Olivia Olson neared a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds, sparking transition opportunities and helping Marshall claim a 34-33 rebounding edge.
Meredith Maier provided a crucial scoring punch with 13 points, including three three-pointers and two blocks, while Peyton Ilderton hit three triples and finished with 11 points, stalling IU Indy's push with a big basket in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, Marshall set the tone from the start, forcing IU Indy into 19 turnovers and limiting their fast break opportunities. The Herd's ability to answer each IU Indy run—whether with a block, a key three-pointer or a pair of free throws—proved decisive as the Jaguars never got closer than single digits in the second half.
