Marshall reaches Sun Belt Conference Semifinals for third straight season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 17-ranked and third-seeded Marshall Men's Soccer team (10-2-5, 6-2-1 SBC) opened the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a 3-1 win over Georgia State at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Sunday night.

Marshall set the tone early with a sharp attack, jumping ahead in the 17th minute when Takahiro Fujita finished high into the top right corner after a quick passing sequence from Carl Romberg and Gabriel Stevanato. Georgia State's Gavin Williams answered to level the contest at 1-1.

Marshall responded before halftime. In the 41st minute, Joao Roberto slipped a shot into the bottom right corner, again involving Stevanato and Romberg on the assists, to make it 2-1 heading into the break.

The final blow came in the 80th minute as Louie Salkeld put away Romberg's third assist of the night, sealing the 3-1 result.

Marshall outshot Georgia State 16-11, with an 8-3 edge in shots on target, and won nine corners.

Goalkeeper Eddie DeMarco made two saves, while the back line kept Georgia State at bay in the final minutes.

NEXT UP
The Herd returns to the pitch on Wednesday night in the semifinals in a rematch from Halloween against second-seeded and No. 16-ranked WVU at 7 p.m. in Morgantown.
