LEXINGTON, Ky. – Marshall Women's Basketball topped Eastern Kentucky, 75-50, in a non-conference contest played at Clive M. Beck Center on the campus of Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., on Sunday.
The Herd earned the win on the strength of its defense, which kept Eastern Kentucky scoreless in the final 11:44 of game action to earn the victory.
"I was really proud of our effort today," Marshall Women's Basketball coach Juli Fulks said. "Our energy was great and we got great energy from the crowd, which was really cool. I thought we had a really good plan coming into this game … which included a lot of full-court pressure to wear them down into the fourth, which obviously, we had an outstanding fourth quarter offensively and defensively."
Timaya Lewis-Eutsey led the Thundering Herd with 26 points while Blessing King recorded her second straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Peyton Ilderton also had 11 points in the win for the Herd.
Marshall (9-3) led just 52-50 with 1:44 left in the third quarter, but a pair of baskets by Lewis-Eutsey jumpstarted a run in which the Herd scored the game's final 23 points.
Lewis-Eutsey said that, coming in, she knew there would be opportunities to get to the basket and she took full advantage, finishing 12 of 16 from the floor.
"Knowing how they were going to play, it was about being aggressive in going to the rim," Lewis-Eutsey said. "I felt like doing so was going to open the floor for everybody. They (EKU) had to adjust to it and sink in, and then we were able to move the ball, find shooters and get the right touches."
The Herd defense forced the Colonels into 22 turnovers, which turned into 28 points in earning the victory.
Marshall also owned a 38-32 rebounding advantage that included 18 offensive rebounds – five of which came from King. Those offensive rebounds led to 19 points.
The Herd led the game for 36 of 40 minutes and jumped out quickly as Lewis-Eutsey scored the Herd's first 10 points to set the offensive tone.
In the second quarter, the Herd used a quick 10-0 run predicated on defense to produce its first double-digit lead at 31-20. The Herd took a 38-35 lead into the locker room.
With the win, Marshall now sets its sights on conference play with a pair of games at Cam Henderson Center this week.
The Herd hosts App State at 11 a.m. on Wednesday before welcoming James Madison to the Cam at 1 p.m. on Saturday. To get tickets for those contests, click HERE.
