WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball Team (5-3) fell 70-69 to UNCW on Wednesday night at Trask Coliseum in Wilmington, North Carolina.
"We gave ourselves a chance, and that's all you can ask for," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson said. "I thought our guys played hard. I thought they played with focus. We obviously have to be more disciplined down the stretch. You can't have a technical after a foul and have them shoot four free throws in a row."
Noah Otshudi paced the Herd with 18 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals in 37 minutes before fouling out late. His production was matched by Wilson Dubinsky, who added 12 points, six rebounds and three assists on 4-of-7 shooting, and Matt Van Komen, who scored 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots while finishing a perfect 4-for-4 from the field.
After a tightly contested first half that saw UNCW hold a slim 31-29 lead at the break, Marshall found its rhythm in the second frame. With just 1:39 remaining, Jalen Speer drilled a three-pointer to give the Herd a 69-62 advantage. However, the Seahawks responded with an 8-0 run fueled by offensive rebounds and trips to the line, capped off by two Nolan Hodge free throws with 19 seconds left to seize the lead.
Despite controlling much of the second half and leading by seven with under two minutes to play, Marshall was undone by a surge from the Seahawks and a significant free throw disparity. The Herd shot 46 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc, leading in most offensive categories, but UNCW's relentless offensive rebounding and 39 attempts at the free throw line proved decisive.
Marshall finished the night with a 22-20 edge in points in the paint. The Herd was a perfect 9-for-9 at the free-throw line but could not overcome the gap created at the other end by UNCW's 29 made free throws on 39 attempts.
