MOBILE, Ala. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball team (15-11, 8-5 SBC) saw a comeback fall short in overtime, 91-82, in overtime Thursday night in Mobile, Alabama, to the South Alabama Jaguars (17-9, 9-4 SBC).
"It was a heck of a game. Those guys force you to take a lot of threes because of their 2-3 Zone," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Corny Jackson said after the game. "We took way more threes than I'd like to take, but you have to play the game. At the end of the day, they made plays when they needed to be made."
The Herd was led in scoring by Obinna Anochili-Killen, who tallied 20 points on a 9-for-14 shooting night to go with three blocks. Mikal Dawson followed with six threes for 18 points while grabbing seven boards as Dezayne Mingo tallied 14 points. Nate Martin brought down a game-high 16 boards.
Marshall trailed 42-36 at halftime and as large of a deficit as 12 points, 60-48, with 13:35 left in the game.
However, MU went on a 19-5 run with six points from Dawson, five from Wyatt Fricks, a triple each from Mingo and Jalen Speer along with a pair from Cade Gibbs to take a 67-64 advantage with just over six minutes left. It was the team's first lead since the 12:24 mark in the first half.
The Jaguars rallied to take a 77-75 lead with 1:22 left in the ballgame. Anochili-Killen tallied two points on a South Alabama goaltending call to tie the game and The Herd shutdown the hosts at the other end to force overtime.
USA outscored MU 14-5 in the extra period to see off The Herd's comeback.
The Herd outrebounded the Jags 42-39, including 16-6 on the offensive glass.
