LAFAYETTE, La. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball team (15-12, 8-6 SBC) fell 79-68 Saturday night in Lafayette, Louisiana, to the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (9-18, 6-8 SBC).
"I think the tougher team won," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Corny Jackson said after the game. "They came out and imposed their will from the beginning of the game. Obviously, it carried on for the rest of the game. We've given up 96 points in the paint the last two games. To me that's toughness plays, mentally and physically. We all have to do some soul searching this week to get better before we head back on the road."
Obinna Anochili-Killen finished with 18 points on a 7-for-12 night from the field, including 3-for-4 from three-point range, with nine blocks and six rebounds.
At 13 points and 10 rebounds, Nate Martin finished with his sixth double-double of the season. The senior went 9-for-11 from the free-throw line. Jalen Speer rounded out a trio of double-figure scorers with 14 points.
Louisiana led from the tip against Marshall. The home side's largest lead of the first half came at 13 points, 30-17, 5:21 left in the opening 20 minutes of play. MU rallied late in the half with a 6-0 run as a Mikal Dawson triple ended the half and saw the visitors cut the deficit to five, 35-30, at the break.
The Herd started the second half on a 4-1 advantage with Anochili-Killen hitting a layup and a jumper from Dezayne Mingo cutting UL's to 36-34 at the 16:55 mark. The Ragin' Cajuns answered with an 8-0 run to go back up by double figures. Louisiana maintained a double-digit lead for the final four minutes to holdoff Marshall.
The Herd won the rebounding battle 41-39 and outscored the hosts 11-8 in second chance points.
