Herd Falls Saturday Afternoon to Coastal Carolina

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall's women's basketball team was never able to lead in a 66-57 loss to Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Chanticleers (19-6, 9-5 SBC) led by double digits after the opening 10 minutes. Marshall (8-18, 3-11 SBC) got within two in the second quarter on an Aislynn Hayes three-pointer, but found itself unable to overcome the early advantage.
Hayes reached double figures with 17 points after leading all with 29 in Thursday night's win. Only CC Mays had more points in Saturday's contest with 20 points. It was the fifth-such game for Mays this season, a career-high.

On an additional positive note for Head Coach Juli Fulks and Marshall, Saturday marked the return of Meredith Maier who had missed the previous two weeks due to injury. Maier scored six points in 15 minutes of game action.
"It was good for her to see the ball go through the net again and start to just get her legs under her on offense and defense," Coach Fulks said. "Taking a few weeks off is hard, it's much harder than people think and just taking that first hit again. You have to get through all the mental stuff just as much as you have to get through the physical stuff."

Coastal again burst ahead to open the second half. The visitors led by as much as 18 in the early 4th before the Herd closed the final quarter outscoring Coastal 20-12.
The Herd hits the road next on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at App State. Tip from Boone is at 6:30 p.m.
