Herd Softball Falls in Day-Night Doubleheader Friday

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Marshall Softball enters Saturday still in search of its first win following a pair of defeats to No. 15 Missouri and Southern Miss.
The Herd did have milestones first hits from Haleigh Adkins, Diamond Leslie, and Paige Simpson.
Freshman Maddie Veal made her collegiate debut in the circle for the Thundering Herd.
First Game: No. 15 Missouri 9, Marshall 1 (5 innings)
The Herd scored its first run of the season following a leadoff 3rd inning double by the junior transfer Simpson. The Herd's first Canadian-born player came around to score on a sacrifice bunt by Leslie and a productive RBI groundout by Bub Feringa.
Five free-passes and two errors doomed the Herd against the 15th-ranked Tigers.
Veal pitched a scoreless 3rd inning in her collegiate debut. The Newnan, Ga. native struck out one with just one run given up being earned.
Second Game: Southern Miss 6, Marshall 2
Three errors let Marshall down in a non-conference loss to Southern Miss Friday evening. Four of the six Golden Eagle runs were unearned.
Sophomore transfer Jules King earned her first Thundering Herd start, pitching two and two-thirds with five hits and five runs.
Feringa - the opening-night starter pitched over four frames in relief, allowing just two hits and no earned runs.
MU had seven hits, including an RBI double from Kasia Parks, but stranded three runners in scoring position consequently.
Marshall faces Iowa at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
