MAC-SBC Challenge contest comes down to the wire
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Women's Basketball had an exciting contest come down to the wire on Saturday, but fell just short in a 73-68 loss to Central Michigan in the MAC-SBC Challenge in front of 1,449 fans at Cam Henderson Center.
With the loss, Marshall falls to 7-17 on the season.
"I don't know many times I've said that we've played really good for 32 minutes and played within the system and understand how to get scores and stops together, but we are really struggling with the discipline to do it for 40 minutes," Marshall head coach Juli Fulks said. "You can't win close games without really great execution on both ends of the floor and we've got to be better at that."
Aislynn Hayes led Marshall with 20 points while C.C. Mays had 19 points and seven rebounds. Leyocha Marigney had a strong all-around performance for the Herd with nine points, seven rebounds and six blocks – four of which came in the fourth quarter.
Marigney's blocks helped Marshall overcome an early fourth quarter deficit, and the Herd took its biggest lead at nine points with 5:12 left on a basket by Mays.
However, the Herd could not get shots to fall down the stretch and Central Michigan took advantage.
Marshall owned a 14-0 advantage in points off turnovers in the contest as the Herd only turned the ball over eight times in the game.
Marshall returns to Sun Belt Conference action on Thursday night looking to get a home win as Old Dominion comes to Cam Henderson Center. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
