Marshall Softball Falls in Extras to Kansas

3/2/2025 3:00:00 PM | Softball

NORMAN, Okla. — Marshall Softball (6-11) ended its first month of the season with a 4-3 eighth-inning loss to Kansas (10-7). The winning run for the Jayhawks just beat Brooklyn Ulrich's throw home in a runners-on-the-corners situation with one out.

The Herd battled to close a weekend which saw the team face Kansas twice, as well as the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners twice. The first month of the season for Coach Morgan Zerkle's team has included playing four games against ranked opponents with more "Power-4" opponents than the nation's top team.

"This team has faced nine Power-4 opponents and has a 6-2 record against the others," Coach Zerkle said. "I am proud of them for not backing down to anyone. After 17 challenging games on the road, I hope every Herd fan out there shows up for some Dot Magic next weekend! This team is a lot of fun to watch compete!"

Senior Rielly Lucas tied the game at three in the 5th with a two-out solo shot. Her second of the season allowed starter Jules King to leave with a no-decision after bouncing back Sunday with 4.1 innings pitched allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

After recording an out to begin the 5th, the ball turned over to junior Paige Maynard who pitched three solid innings in relief with just the one unearned run to end the game.

Ulrich and freshman Diamond Leslie scored each of Marshall's other runs in the 3rd on a two-out KU error. All Herd runs came with two outs but the team did leave six on-base.

Leslie finishes the weekend with seven hits after knocking two more on Sunday. The first-year player also became the fifth MUSB player to hit their first collegiate home run back on Saturday.

At last, Marshall returns to Dot Hicks Field next weekend as mentioned by Coach Zerkle. The team plays in Huntington for its 2025 home opener on Friday, Mar. 7. The Herd hosts Loyola Chicago, Buffalo, and Valparaiso for the Marshall March Madness home round robin tournament.
