ROME, Ga. – The sixth-seeded Marshall University Tennis team (19-5) grinded through a five-plus hour match, including a rain delay, to take down third-seeded Texas State (16-6) 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Rome, Georgia, on Friday.
"Great job by Alina to grind out her match to earn us the win. Time to get ready for a quick turnaround against Troy," Head Coach John Mercer said.
After falling in the first set and rallying to take the second, Alina Mokrynskaya found herself down 5-4 in the third and on serve as the match moved indoors after a weather delay. The freshman grinded out the final three games to seal The Herd's advancement to the semifinals.
In doubles, Sophia Hurrion and Aisling McGrane kicked it off with a 6-0 sweep of Maria Lora and Chantajah Mills at No. 2 doubles. It was the duos fourth sweep in their last five contests.
Johanna Strom and Nel Van Hout captured the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Callie Creath and Kiana Graham at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, McGrane picked up MU's first win at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-3, triumph over Tadiwa Muchi to make it 2-1.
