NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference has named Marshall Track & Field graduate Ethan Bowens as its 2025 Overall Male Postgraduate Scholarship Award Winner. He is the top male award winner and one of eight postgraduate student-athletes from the conference named as award recipients.
A three-year letterwinner in Men's Track & Field, Bowens graduated from Marshall this spring with a bachelor's degree in exercise science. His scholarship will go towards his future work as he applies for M.D. and D.O. graduate degrees at several universities including the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Bowens strives to be a physician for the U.S. Military.
"I would first like to thank the Sun Belt Postgraduate Scholarship Committee for their trust and support in awarding me this scholarship," said Bowens. "It is a true blessing and I am incredibly honored to have been chosen—especially knowing how many outstanding student-athletes represent our conference."
"I'm deeply grateful to Marshall University, the track and field coaching staff, the academic and athletic departments for their constant support in fostering an environment where I could grow as a student-athlete."
"This award is a shared achievement, and I am honored to represent both Marshall University and the Sun Belt Conference."
Bowens was an instrumental piece of relaunching the men's program when it competed in early 2023 for the first time in nearly two decades. He competed in 36 meets for the Herd across three seasons, earning Third Team All-Conference with the DMR Team in 2023.
In the classroom, Bowens was awarded the "Best Undergraduate Student" at the 36th Annual Marshall University Health Sciences Day last fall. His work has led him to a research fellowship through NASA's West Virginia Space Grant Consortium.
"Ethan is the true definition of a student-athlete," Director of Track & Field Keith Roberts said. "He is a great person, phenomenal student, and dedicated athlete. I couldn't think of anyone more deserving of this recognition. I have no doubt that he will utilize this opportunity to do something positive for himself and everyone he encounters. We are very proud of Ethan and all of his academic achievements and honors."
As the overall male postgraduate award winner, Bowens will be formally recognized at the Sun Belt Conference Honors Banquet in conjunction with the Sun Belt Fall Meetings on October 16, 2025 in Atlanta.
The scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes with stated intentions to pursue a graduate degree following the completion of their undergraduate requirements and are sent directly to the graduate school of each recipient's choice. The recipients were selected by the Sun Belt Postgraduate Scholarship Committee, which is composed of Faculty Athletic Representatives from across the conference.
