HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 10 Marshall Men's Soccer team (2-0-3) delivered a 4-0 shutout at Hoops Family Field on Sunday over UC Santa Barbara, including a five-point performance from Joao Roberto.

"I like how he managed the rhythm," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chirs Grassie said. "That's kind of what he does. He really understands what the game is, and then he's in the right spot because he knows."

After a key save from Dan Rose four minutes into the contest, Marshall set the tempo as Kirill Pakhomov opened the scoring in the 24th minute, finishing off a corner from Yasha Schaerer to give the Herd a 1-0 lead. The assist marked Schaerer's team-leading third of the season. The Herd carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

The contest shifted decisively in MU's favor after a red card to Eddie Villeda reduced the Gauchos to 10 men in the 57th minute. Marshall capitalized on their advantage, tallying three goals in the final 20 minutes.

Roberto doubled the lead in the 72nd minute off a feed from Keaviano Francis, then added an unassisted goal in the 85th off a UCSB save and a deflection off the visitor's defender to make it 3-0.

MoMo Diop rounded out the scoring in the 87th minute, slotting home a pass from Roberto to cap the Herd's four-goal outburst.

Marshall outshot the Gauchos 16-4, producing 10 second-half attempts while holding UCSB to just one shot on goal in the contest.

The back line delivered Marshall's first clean sheet of the season. Marshall with Roberto's two goals and assist coming in just 44 minutes off the bench.
