HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 6 Marshall Men's Soccer team (3-0-3, 1-0-0 SBC) began Sun Belt Conference play with a 2-1 win over Coastal Carolina on Friday night at Hoops Family Field.
"It's always a tough game against Coastal," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "They defend very well. They made it very transitional."
The Herd broke through in the 33rd minute when Keaviano Francis delivered an assist to David de la Vibora, who placed his shot high into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Just nine minutes later, Marshall doubled its advantage as Rai Pinto calmly converted a penalty to the bottom left corner after Carl Romberg drew a foul in the box.
Coastal Carolina quickly answered, cutting the deficit to 2-1 in the 43rd minute through Jaland Larmond.
The visitors pressed for an equalizer throughout the second half, forcing Dan Rose into two key saves in the final six minutes to hold off the Chanticleers.
Both teams finished with four corners, and Marshall held a 9-7 edge in shots, 5-3 in shots on goal.
