RICHMOND, Va. – The No. 4 Marshall Men's Soccer team (3-0-4) played to a 2-2 draw on the road at VCU Wednesday night in Richmond, Virginia. The Herd remains unbeaten in its seven matches.
Goalkeeper Eddie DeMarco came on in the ninth minute making five saves in his debut in the Green and White.
"We seem to be having no luck this season with injuries. To add to the five guys who are out who could be starting for us, we've now lost Dan as well. But Eddie stepped up and was really fantastic with his performance tonight, which was great to see," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "I'd say he saved us a couple of times for sure tonight. Not the result we wanted tonight, and we still need to clean things up in transition, but there are lots of positives to take from the result on the road against a very well organized and resilient VCU squad. I see them being a tournament team, so although we're disappointed we didn't put them away in the second half, there's still time for us to learn from our mistakes and put it right. We continue on this road trip to play a Georgia Southern team on a bit of a hot streak, so no better opponent for us to test ourselves against right now."
The contest turned early when VCU's Theo Drennan received a red card forcing the Rams to play with 10 men for the remainder of the game. VCU opened the scoring in the 28th minute as Deniss Hayes struck for the home side.
Marshall responded just before halftime, as Joao Roberto finished low to the left side with a mere 16 seconds left in the half, leveling the match at 1-1. It was Roberto's team-leading third goal of the season.
The Herd seized the lead in the 51st minute when Yasha Schaerer found Takahiro Fujita for a header off a corner kick to make it a 2-1 advantage. The assist marked Schaerer's fourth of the year.
The Rams quickly answered in the 59th minute through Mohammed Ibrahim, who finished off a pass from Andrey Salmeron to tie the match at 2-2.
Marshall dictated the attacking play throughout, finishing with a 19-10 edge in shots and a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.
