Herd Volleyball Falls in SBC Opener to Coastal Carolina

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University volleyball team (8-6, 0-1 SBC) suffered a 3-0 defeat (25-12, 25-21, 25-18) to open Sun Belt Conference play Friday against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (8-4, 1-0 SBC) at the Cam Henderson Center.
"I thought it took us too long to get going," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said after the match. "I was really proud of our first ball the whole match. I thought our server receive, we were pretty much in the system we wanted to. When we served aggressive we got what we wanted. It's just not doing things consistent enough and you can't have that with a team like Coastal."
Beatrice Ciccarelli led the Herd with seven kills and three blocks, while Marae Reilly added seven kills on .500 hitting. Emma Barnett finished with six kills, eight digs and an ace.
Coastal Carolina took early control with a 13-4 run out of the gate. The Chanticleers' closed the set with a 25-12.
Marshall regrouped in the second, trimming a seven-point deficit to trail just 17-16 on strong attacks from Ciccarelli and Reilly. Coastal Carolina responded with a late push to take the set 25-21.
Coastal Carolina built an 8-2 lead early in the third set. Marshall fought back, but the Chanticleers held as they closed the match 25-18.
Coastal Carolina finished with 15 team blocks to Marshall's 4 and hit .326 for the match.
