ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Marshall volleyball (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season Friday afternoon, falling 3-0 (24-26, 15-25, 20-25) to Florida Atlantic at the Michigan Invitational.
"We didn't execute our first ball well enough. This hindered us from getting our middles in the match early and effectively," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "Our blocking discipline broke down in key moments, putting their pins in a much more positive advantage and too many unforced errors in critical points of the match which led to FAU jumping on a lead. Tons of good factors happening on both ends of the ball just not consistently, but this is what we wanted from this tournament. Great competition to prep us early for conference play later on."
Beatrice Ciccarelli paced Marshall with eight kills, three digs and two block assists, while Logan Henderson added seven kills on a .250 hitting percentage. Audrey Geer turned in six kills, four digs, one ace and a block assist, and Elli Barry contributed six kills and four digs.
"I thought Cicca (Beatrice Ciccarelli) did a great job both offensively and defensively, We need to find her more this will help lighten the load on our outsides," Stout said.
In the first set, Marshall erased a five-point deficit midway through, rallying from 18-13 down to grab a 20-18 lead following a run that included a service ace from Emma Barnett. Florida Atlantic responded, however, edging MU 26-24 in the opening set.
Florida Atlantic took momentum with a 6-0 run early in the second after a 2-2 tie as MU trailed 8-2 lead. Marshall couldn't overcome
In set three, The Herd battled to a 13-13 tie before back-to-back blocks from the Owls put Marshall at a 15-13 deficit, and falling 25-20 in the final frame.
Florida Atlantic hit .346 for the match and posted seven team blocks.
"We'll review our film, make adjustments and get back to work as we move on to tomorrow's play," Stout said.
