CONWAY, S.C. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (11-8, 4-3 SBC) fell in five sets (21-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-15, 15-12) to open the weekend on Saturday at Coastal Carolina.

Emma Barnett registered her third consecutive double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs.
Kahea Carvalho finished with 23 assists with Emma Sayre recording 25 digs. Beatrice Ciccarelli and Marae Reilly each recorded six blocks.

In the first set, the Herd trailed 7-5 early, but kills from Maddie Smith and Barnett along with a Coastal attacking error, saw the visitors grab an 8-7 lead. The two sides battled back and forth before the Chanticleers took a 21-20 advantage late in the frame. However, Marshall ended the set on a 5-0 run, including a pair of kills and a service ace from Barnett, to take it 25-21.

The second set saw Coastal take the early 1-0 lead, but the Herd took advantage of three attacking errors by the home side with a Ciccarelli kill to go up 4-1 and never trail the rest of the set. Marshall closed out the frame by taking four of the final six points to go up 2-0 with the 25-20 win in the set.

MU led for the majority of the third, the Chanticleers forced a fourth set by capturing the frame 25-20 by taking seven of the final eight points. Then the two sides traded points in the fourth until the score was tied 9-9. Coastal then held Marshall at bay by capturing 16 of the last 22 points in the frame to win 25-15 and force a fifth and final set.

The Chanticleers led from the first serve in the fifth, but a 3-0 run midway through the set with a Barnett kill, a Carvalho service ace and a block assist from Ciccarelli and Carys Kerr forced a CCU timeout and cut the deficit to 10-9. Coastal came out of the timeout and held off the Herd to take the set 15-12 and seal the match.
