CONWAY, S.C. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (12-8, 5-3 SBC) registered a sweep (25-16, 25-19, 25-10) to end the weekend on Sunday over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Sunday in Conway, South Carolina.
Â
As a team, the Herd finished with 50 kills on 95 attacks and just five errors for a .474 hitting percentage.
Â
"Extremely proud of how we responded after yesterday's match. This was a full team win in every sense of the word," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "The double libero was really effective for us today. From Emma Sayre's serving to Addison Saunders stepping up in a big way, leading our defense and serve-receive, we were able to get into our offensive flow with ease."
Maddie Smith had a match-high 14 kills on 22 attacks with no errors for a .636 hitting percentage, as Emma Barnett followed with 12 and a .476 hitting percentage. Kahea Carvalho registered 24 assists with Addison Saunders picking up 14 digs.
Â
The first set was all Marshall. MU started the frame with a kill from Smith and a service ace by Carvalho as it never trailed. A kill from Beatrice Ciccarelli gave the Herd its largest lead of the set at nine points (18-9) as it cruised to the 25-16 victory.
Â
The second set was a tug-of-war affair seeing the score tied 13 times in the first 30 points as the two sides sat in a deadlock at 15-15. However, a kill and solo block from Smith, a pair of service aces from Emma Sayre and a kill from Ciccarelli sent Marshall on a 5-0 to take a 20-15 advantage and force the Chanticleers to use both of its timeouts. Coastal fought off three set points, but a kill by Smith closed the set 25-19 in favor of the Herd. MU completed 19 of its 35 attacks with just one error for a .514 hitting percentage.
Â
The Chanticleers took the opening point of the third set, but the rest of the frame was all Marshall. The visitors held Coastal to just nine points the rest of the set. The Herd closed the set and match with a 6-0 run led by four points from Barnett on a pair of kills and service aces, cruising to the 25-10 win in the final set. MU accumulated a .516 hitting percentage with 13 kills on 31 attacks and just one error.
Â
"Our middles had big-time performances, getting involved early and creating opportunities that allowed our pins to swing confidently and attack open seams. When we're balanced offensively and everyone is involved, we're tough to defend," Stout said. "The depth of this group continues to show, and the belief we're building in one another is something special. Proud of how everyone stepped up, how we responded, and the way this team continues to find a way together!"
