LAFAYETTE, La. - Marshall Women's Soccer (7-3-5, 3-1-3 SBC) earned a draw on the road Sunday at Louisiana, 1-1. The Herd remains in 4th place in a tight SBC race, two points within 2nd.
MU's Wiktoria Mikrut scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season just seconds before the halftime whistle. Mikrut lined up for a penalty kick following a UL foul, had her initial shot saved, but scored on the rebound to put Coach Rafa Simoes and MU up at the break.
"Really proud of this group," said Coach Simoes. "We battled, showed tremendous resilience, and earned a valuable point on the road against one of the top teams in the conference. We fought until the final whistle and showed the character, commitment, and determination that define this team."
"What makes me most proud is the way these girls continue to stand up for each other, embrace the challenge, and compete in every moment. The resilience and belief within this group are special."
Marshall held on for the second half, with junior goalkeeper Emma Durand making four saves. The resistance was broken with a host goal in the 88th minute to tie the contest.
The draw remains a positive result for Marshall. With three matches remaining in the regular season, MU has a four point lead on the 8th and final spot for next month's SBC Tournament.
"We continue to compete in the Sun Belt, and performances like this show the direction we are heading," added Coach Simoes. "Proud to be their coach. We keep building, we keep fighting, and we keep moving forward together."
Marshall travels directly to Atlanta for a Thursday evening, Oct. 22 meeting with Georgia State.
