MONROE, La. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (10-4, 3-0 SBC) opened the weekend with a four-set win over the ULM Warhawks (25-18, 13-25, 25-19, 25-23) on Friday in Monroe, Louisiana.
Â
Maddie Smith paced both sides with 15 kills in the match falling one dig shy of a double-double with nine. Logan Henderson joined Smith in double-figure kills with 11.
Â
Kahea Carvalho registered a match-high 26 assists as Emma Sayre recorded a match-high 25 digs.
Â
In the first set, the Herd bent, but didn't break as it didn't trail by more than three points in the first 34 points of the set and tied the match at 17 points with a Marae Reilly service ace. MU then rattled off eight of the next nine points to take the opening frame 25-18 with the final point coming on a block assist by Beatrice Ciccarelli and Henderson.
Â
After dropping the second set 25-13 to ULM, Marshall came out with a vengeance in the third. The Herd never trailed in the frame as the last tie was at 3-3. Reilly ended the set 25-19 with her fourth kill during the frame to give MU a 2-1 lead.
Â
Marshall trailed 20-11 in the fourth as the match appeared to be headed to a fifth set. However, the Herd had other plans. In a comeback that saw four points from Smith (three kills and a solo block), a pair of Kylie Wong service aces and a pair of kills from Emma Barnett, including the match winner, the visiting side captured 15 of the final 18 points to seal the weekend opening match.
