MONROE, La. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (10-5, 3-1 SBC) saw a five-match winning streak come to an end with a five-set defeat (25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 15-11) to the ULM Warhawks on Saturday in Monroe, Louisiana.

"The first two sets took us too long to get into a groove," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "I felt like we hindered ourselves at the service line and had too many unforced errors. I'm proud of the effort to fight in the third and fourth sets, but we have some work to do in preparation for JMU."

Maddie Smith registered a match-high 20 kills with a .333 hitting percentage. Joining Smith in double-digit kills were Emma Barnett and Logan Henderson at 11 and 10, respectively.

Emma Sayre notched a career-high 33 digs with Kahea Carvalho dishing out 34 assists and Beatrice Ciccarelli rejecting five attacks.

Early in the first set, the two sides battled with neither team garnering a lead of more than two points as the score was deadlocked 13-13. ULM took the lead on the next point and carried it through the remainder of the frame as MU fell 25-23.

The second set was much of the same. The second saw the scoreboard tied 15 times as the Warhawks took the set 25-23 over the Herd.

Marshall kicked it into gear in the third. After a ULM attacking error, MU grabbed a 13-7 advantage, the largest lead by either side in the match. However, the Warhawks battled back with 12 of the next 18 points to tie the contest 19-19. The Herd settled back in with a Smith kill and a block assist by Marae Reilly and Henderson sealed the set 25-22 to force a fourth set.

The fourth set was all Marshall. After the frame was tied 3-3 early, the Herd went on a 7-2 run, led by three kills from Smith. MU cruised the rest of the way with ULM not getting closer than within four down the stretch, 18-14, sealing the set 25-19 to force an all-deciding fifth set.

A Barnett kill late in the fifth gave Marshall an 11-10 advantage, but ULM tallied the final five points after a timeout to take the set 15-11 and the match.
