HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (10-7, 3-2) dropped a 3-2 decision (25-18, 25-20, 27-29, 19-25, 15-12) to open the week against James Madison on Thursday in the Cam Henderson Center.

"I'm proud of the group to battle and flip the switch in set three and sticking to the game plan," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "Have to give credit to JMU. They're a well-rounded program. I thought it took us too long in sets one and two to get into our flow."

Maddie Smith led Marshall with 18 kills and added 14 digs with Emma Barnett registering 13 kills and 12 digs with each finishing with a double-double.

Kahea Carvalho picked up 27 assists as Emma Sayre registered 20 digs.

The Dukes dominated the first sets never trailing and hitting over .300 in both taking the first 25-18 and second 25-20 as Marshall entered the third trailing 2-0.

The Herd never trailed in the third, but it was a battle. MU opened the set with the first four points as Lia Beverly and Smith each picked up a kill to go with a pair of JMU errors. A kill from Barnett gave Marshall its largest lead of the set. However, the Dukes grinded back to tie the set 24-24. The visitors fought off four match points, but a pair of Smith kills finished it for MU at 29-27 to force a fourth set.

James Madison took the opening point of the fourth set and did not trail until Marshall captured a 10-9 advantage after a JMU error and never looked back. Down the stretch, the Herd took eight of the final 11 points with Logan Henderson finishing it with a kill at 25-19 to send it to a deciding fifth set.

After Marshall took the opening point of the fifth, JMU took the next three. MU was within one at 5-4 after a Beatrice Ciccarelli kill, but the Dukes held off the home side to take the set 15-12 and the match.
