Â
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (11-6, 4-2) captured a crucial four-set win (25-18, 25-18, 15-25, 25-12) over the James Madison Dukes on Friday in the Cam Henderson Center.
Â
The win marked the first for the Herd over the Dukes in the Sun Belt era and the program's first win over JMU since 1996.
Â
"I'm super proud of the team," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "They were not happy with our performance yesterday. We came in did film, had a great serve and pass, made the adjustments and changes and executed the game plan start to finish."
Â
Emma Barnett registered her second double-double in as many matches against the Dukes with 15 digs and 13 kills. Maddie Smith joined Barnett at 13 kills as Beatrice Ciccarelli finished 12 attacks with a .526 hitting percentage.
Â
Kahea Carvalho finished with 26 assists as Isabelle Nieves added 20 with Emma Sayre recording 17 digs.
Â
The first set went as near perfect as it could for the Herd. MU finished the opening set with 19 kills on 34 attacks with just a single error for a .529 hitting percentage. Marshall was persistent with 2-0 and 3-0 runs as a James Madison attacking finished the set at 25-18 as the Herd went wire-to-wire in the frame.
Â
The Dukes held the advantage through the first 12 points until a block assist from Ciccarelli and Logan Henderson saw Marshall take a 7-6 lead. After JMU tied the match again at 7-7, MU went on a 3-0 run with a pair of Carvalho service aces. James Madison battled back to tie it at 16-16, but Marshall captured nine of the final 11 points of the match to take a 2-0 advantage with a 25-18 victory in the frame.
Â
After falling 25-15 in the third, the Herd came out with a vengeance in the fourth. Marshall took seven of the first nine points to begin the frame. MU just kept pouncing on top of the Dukes by extending its lead until Barnett closed out the set with a pair of kills to seal the frame and match with a dominant final of 25-12.
