Marshall Softball Battles Past Florida A&M in Extra Innings

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Marshall Softball (4-2) earned a gutsy 3-2 victory in nine innings over Florida A&M on Tuesday, powered by a two-home run, three-RBI performance from Sydni Burko and a shutdown relief outing by Jules King.
Burko delivered the damage for Marshall's offense, hitting the go-ahead shot in the 9th to break the deadlock. The Herd's transfer infielder leveled the scoring in the 3rd with a two-run blast, driving in freshman Sydney Turner. Burko finished 2-for-4 at the plate, accounting for all three Herd runs driven in during the game. The strong production continued her team-leading 10-for-18 (.556) start to the season.

"It was a battle from start to finish but we are a bunch of competitors," said Burko. "This group is special, top-to-bottom our lineup brings the intensity. There is not a better group of women and staff I'd rather compete with. I'm beyond blessed to be part of the Herd."
After Florida A&M scored two runs in the bottom of the 1st, the game settled into a tense pitchers' duel. Rylan Miller made her first collegiate start for the Herd, pitching four-plus innings and striking out four, before handing the ball to Jules King. King dominated in relief, throwing five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and allowing just one hit to earn the win.
The Herd's junior pitcher was tasked with taking the circle in four-consecutive last at-bat winning opportunities for the Rattlers. Marshall's defense stepped up in key moments, including a clutch double play turned by Paige Simpson and Haleigh Adkins to end a threat in the 8th and keep the contest tied. In the bottom of the 9th, King shut the door with her seventh punchout.
