Marshall Rides Dominant First Half to Down Georgia State, 71-56

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Women's Basketball controlled from start to finish as it returned to Sun Belt Conference play, dispatching Georgia State 71-56 at the Cam Henderson Center Thursday. The Herd jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and led by as much as 24, improving to 21-6 overall and 11-3 in SBC play.

"I was really happy with today's win," Head Coach Juli Fulks said. "There were times it wasn't really pretty but we tried to do some different things in terms of lineups."

"I thought we played really well in the first half, and then it got really physical and there were things I wish we did a little better. But, overall we got some stops when we needed it, we rebounded the ball unbelievably well in the first half, so that was really good. Once it got tight Meredith [Maier] hit a couple big threes which kind of helped stretch it out which was good. Overall I thought it was a decent effort and we needed to get that game."

Senior guard Timaya Lewis-Eutsey set another milestone this season, topping 500 points (507 total) on the season with a game-high 19 points, with eight rebounds and four steals. She is the 15th player in MU program history to do so in a single season. Lewis-Eutsey also matched her season-high on the glass.

The Herd set the tone early, racing to a 23-10 edge by the end of the first quarter with Peyton Ilderton connecting from deep to fuel the opening surge. Marshall extended its advantage to 19 points at halftime, holding Georgia State to just 21 points through the opening 20 minutes.

Meredith Maier kept her hot-shooting streak going with 18 points and seven rebounds, connecting on 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Maier has scored at least a dozen in eight-consecutive games. Ilderton matched her with a season-high with five three-pointers, finishing with 15 points to help the Herd connect on 10-of-26 from long range.

Marshall's wire-to-wire victory was highlighted by a relentless effort on the boards, as the Herd outrebounded Georgia State 44-34, including 14 offensive rebounds.

The win ties Marshall for the third-most victories in a single-season in program history and marks the 13th time this year the Herd has made 10 or more three-pointers in a game.
