STATESBORO, Ga. – In a high-stakes Sun Belt Conference matchup with the top of the league on the line, Marshall Women's Basketball fell 76-55 at Georgia Southern on Thursday night. The Herd never led in the contest, slipping to 22-7 overall and 12-4 in conference play as the regular season enters its final stretch.
Georgia Southern seized control early at the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center, erupting for a 15-0 run in the opening quarter. Marshall trailed 26-10 after the first period and by as much as 24 early in the second. The Eagles shot 76% in the opening quarter and 60% from deep in the first half.
"We understood the plan and had a really good practice yesterday and shootaround today and then came out incredibly flat on defense," Head Coach Juli Fulks said. "That put us in a really big hole and then in the second quarter we came out and played really hard, got five steals, started the third quarter really well. There were some really good segments of that game but obviously when you're playing a team that good we have to put 40 minutes together and we didn't do that today."
The Herd pulled to within six in a third quarter rally led by Timaya Lewis-Eutsey. The senior guard finished with 21 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, marking her 12th 20-point effort of the season. The hosts would respond with eight of the final nine points of the quarter to stretch the lead back to double figures.
Despite the loss, the Herd remains in contention with two league games left and continues to chase top seeding at the SBC Tournament next month. Marshall will close the regular season against the Eagles who are tied with and hold the tiebreaker against Troy with a 13-2 league record.
