Marshall Outlasts Georgia State in Crucial Road Win

2/21/2026 3:49:00 PM | Women's Basketball

ATLANTA, Ga. – Marshall Women's Basketball captured a high-stakes Sun Belt Conference victory on the road Thursday, outlasting Georgia State 82-75 in a battle that featured 10 ties and 14 lead changes. The Herd improved to 23-7 overall and 13-4 in league play, fueled by another dominant performance from senior Timaya Lewis-Eutsey.

The contest inside the GSU Convocation Center had a late-season feel throughout, with neither team leading by more than six points until the closing minutes. Lewis-Eutsey put on a masterclass, pouring in 32 points (11-of-21 FG, 3-of-6 from deep, 7-of-10 FT), grabbing seven rebounds, swatting a season-high six blocks and swiping four steals in 37 minutes. Her late-game heroics included a crucial tying layup with just over six minutes left, a highlight-reel steal and score to give Marshall the lead at 73-70, and steady defensive disruption that sparked an 8-0 Herd run in the fourth quarter.

"I was proud of our overall game effort," Head Coach Juli Fulks said. "Georgia State shot the ball incredibly well, they ended up being 54 percent from the three-point line and made a lot of stuff at the rim that I thought were well contested. They shot the ball really well which meant we were going to have to score with them and we did a really good job of taking care of the ball."

Marshall found secondary scoring in a big way off the bench from Meredith Maier, who rebounded to drill four three-pointers and finish with 12 points. Timberlynn Yeast was a force on the glass, scoring 10 points and matching her season best with four offensive boards, which helped the Herd rack up 26 second-chance points. Peyton Ilderton added 11 points and was perfect at the line, knocking down all six of her free throws, including two clutch makes in the final 73 seconds to stretch the lead to eight and seal the victory.

"Our biggest thing that we talked about at halftime was that we had to get more pressure and a few more steals because they were shooting it so well we had to find a way to go get the ball and we started with a couple steals and that let us get out in transition a little bit," Coach Fulks said. "I thought there were a lot of good efforts, especially Peyton Ilderton, she had to handle a lot of the press and did a really good job taking care of the ball."

The Herd's defense delivered in the clutch, finishing with eight blocks and seven steals as a team. Georgia State stayed within striking distance behind 20 points from Kaleigh Addie and 16 more from Crystal Henderson, but Marshall's defensive intensity and timely offense proved decisive. The win is Marshall's seventh Sun Belt road win and maintains a tight race at the top of the standings with just two game windows remaining.
