Herd Tennis Takes Down VCU on Sunday

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. – The Marshall University Tennis team (5-3) picked up its third straight win in a 6-1 victory over the VCU Rams on Sunday at the 7827 Tennis Center in Barboursville.

"VCU is a solid team. They're a good program. They have competitive kids. So it was good to see us get off to a good start with a win in doubles. Having two freshmen (Paula Berzina and Sarah Copley) come through was really nice to see. Hopefully we continue to get confidence off that. We've won a few in a row and that's great. Time get ready for WVU in a couple weeks."

In doubles, Marshall fell at number one, but Nour El Ouazzani and Johanna Strom evened it at 1-1 with a 6-4 triumph at number three.

Then at number two, freshmen Paula Berzina and Sarah Copley, who moved up from number three on Friday, battled to earn the doubles point for the home side in a tiebreaker.

The momentum carried into singles for the Herd. Polina Gumeniuk started with a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory at number two. Thalia Smith followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win at number five as Strom clinched the contest 6-4, 6-2 at number one.

Alina Mokrynska rattled off a 6-4, 6-4 win at number three with El Ouazzani grinding out a 6-4, 7-5 victory at number six.
