Marshall Softball Travels to Texas State for Pivotal Sun Belt Conference Series

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Sun Belt Conference-leading Marshall Thundering Herd (23-9, 5-1 SBC) makes the trip to the Lone Star State to face the preseason league favorites Texas State (20-13, 3-3 SBC).
The first game of a three-game set will be at 7 p.m. eastern, 6 p.m. San Marcos time Friday evening.

Coach Morgan Zerkle
- Head Coach Morgan Zerkle is in her 3rd season as head coach at her alma mater. The 2017 All-American for the Herd led the team that season with a .476 average en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance. The Herd has made two NCAA Regionals in its history (2013 & 2017). Â
- Marshall vaulted up to a 2nd place finish in the Sun Belt Conference in season two under Zerkle. The Herd improved its win total by six games with five more SBC victories from the season prior.Â
- Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - plays professionally for the AUSL's Chicago Bandits. She is also on the active Team USA Softball roster.Â
MARSHALL NOTES
- Marshall has won six in a row and 14 of its last 15 contests. The Herd is up to No. 31 in the NCAA RPI to lead the SBC.Â
- Marshall's 56 home runs match Coastal Carolina for most in the league. The Herd tied a single-game program-record with six home runs in its victory over Georgia Southern Sunday. All three of the team's record six home run contests have come in league games in the last three seasons under Coach Zerkle.
- MU's pitching ranks 2nd in the SBC, with the team's 2.93 ERA trailing only Texas State (2.87). The staff's six shutouts already surpasses last season's five total.Â

ABOUT TEXAS STATE
- Texas State has played five ranked teams this season, including Wednesday evening's narrow 3-2 defeat to #1 Texas. The Bobcats and Herd are two of seven 20-win teams in the conference.
- SBC Preseason Player of the Year Aiyana Coleman has eight home runs on the season. SBC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Madison Azua posts a 2.17 ERA and a league-leading 13 victories.
- Marshall has won three of the 10 meetings between the two sides since 2023, including a series-victory at Dot Hicks Field last season.
